III’S WIN AGAIN AND ARE STILL BEST OF CHUMS

On route South down the A3 Jack informed me of his excitement about being reunited with new III’s skipper Richard Rudden. He regaled me with one particular story of how RiRu his then Head of House forbid him from sneaking into the TV room to watch the 06 / 07 Ashes Series in the g TV room.

I can’t use the words he used to describe RiRu’s tyrannous reign as Head of House as I want to avoid receiving multiple expletive warnings from your respective IT departments (assuming you have a proper job unlike myself and Ben Moss). I was just glad to hear 2nd Year Specs were still bullying / fagging 4ths after I’d left school.

Anyways to the game and it was a sluggish start from the III’s on a heavy fortress Northbrook pitch. The only notable occurrences during the first 20 minutes were the number of dirty tackles from the Cholmlians that would have warranted bookings at a higher level.  Credit goes especially to Danny and Buzz for keeping their cool against particularly dirty full backs.

The III’s opener came courtesy of a set play, a more familiar method of goal during the Old Fentonians era of 11/12. An unlikely scorer in JCB who headed home from close range, well deserved after a distinguished start to the 12/13 campaign. We all know goals means girls.

As the half progressed the III’s took a more of strangle hold on the game, and on possession, and the second soon followed.  Another set play was expertly tapped in from 1 yard by our senior pro James Moss to keep his record of alive of scoring in every Arthurian League season since before the birth of RCB. Half Time.

The chat at the break revolved around the importance of the next goal.

2-1. Less said about that the better.

Cholms heads lifted after their goal which had come against the run of play, but despite an increased share in possession they were unable to penetrate the heart of the III’s defence. As per usual JCB and Wilko stood tall, won every header and tackle and were expertly shielded by Dolly and B Moss. Jenks once again had little to do between the sticks and is unlikely to have covered 1K during the course of the 90 minutes. Fingers crossed the impromptu Safari dinner party was a success!

Nasher put the icing on the cake and ensured a comfortable last ten with a cracking strike from 30 yards. The 'slight hint' of a deflection helped the well struck shot evade the reaches of their keeper / captain and nestle in the top corner. From where I was standing it looked as though his dubious head gear (only acceptable on the ski slopes not Northbrook) had played its part in the goal.

Mr Greenwood blew for full time and yet another 3 points were secured.  Not a vintage III’s display, but they do say the best teams win when playing badly, and we must take a lot of heart from such a comfortable win over a side that ran us close in last years Justin Lee Collins Semi Final. With the addition of some extra quality over the past few weeks there’s no reason we shouldn’t be challenging for honours on more than two fronts come the end of the season.

Manches didn't trouble the scorers.
